Jesus! sole oracle of truth, Oh may we learn of thee! Receive true wisdom from thy mouth, And live from error free.
One great event by thee foretold, Teach us to keep in view; Thy coming, when we shall behold, And share thy glory too.
Till then, may all thy people here Walk with increasing light, And when in glory thou appear, Welcome the joyful sight.
FATHER of mercies, in thy Word What endless glory shines! For ever, be thy Name ador'd For those celestial lines.
Here springs of consolation rise To cheer the fainting mind: And thirsty souls receive supplies,. And sweet refreshment find.
When guilt and terror, pain and grief, United, rend the heart, Here sinners meet divine relief To heal the raging smart.
Here the Redeemer's welcome voice Spreads heavenly peace around; And life and everlasting joys, Attend the blissful sound.
O may those heavenly pages be My ever dear delight!
And still new beauties may I And still increasing light!
Divine Instructor, gracious Lord, Be thou for ever near: Teach me to love thy sacred word, And view my Saviour there!
Thy word is truth."-John xvii. 17.
THE Spirit breathes upon the word And brings the truth to sight; Precepts and promises afford A sanctifying light.
A glory gilds the sacred page. Majestic, like the sun; It gives a light to every age, It gives, but borrows none.
The hand that gave it still supplies The gracious light and heat: His truths upon the nations rise, They rise, but never set.
Let everlasting thanks be thine, For such a bright display, As makes a world of darkness shine With beams of heavenly day.
My soul rejoices to pursue The steps of him I love. Till glory breaks upon my view In brighter worlds above.
SOURCE of light and pow'r divine, Deign upon thy truth to shine; Lord, behold thy servant stands, Lo. to thee he lifts his hands: Satisfy his soul's desire, Touch his lip with holy fire!
Source of light and pow'r divine, Deign upon thy truth to shine.
Breathe thy Spirit, so shall fall Unction sweet upon us all; "Till, by odours scatter'd round, Christ himself be trac'd and found; Then shall ev'ry raptur'd heart, Rich in peace and joy depart: Source of light and pow'r divine, Deign upon thy truth to shine.
CCLIV.
Judges, vi. 37-40.
THE signs which God to Gideon gave, His holy Sov'reignty made known, That he alone has pow'r to save,
And claims the glory as his own.
The dew which first the fleece had fill'd, When all the earth was dry around, Was from it afterward withheld,
And only fell upon the ground.
To Israel thus the heavenly dew Of saving truth was long restrain'd; Of which the Gentiles nothing knew,.. But dry and desolate remain'd.
But now the Gentiles have receiv'd The balmy dew of gospel peace; And Israel, who his Spirit griev'd,
Is left a dry and empty fleece.
This dew still falls at his command, To keep his chosen plants alive; They shail, though in a thirsty land, Like willows by the waters thrive.
THE manna, favour'd Israel's meat, Was gatherd day by day; When all the host was serv'd, the heat Melted the rest away.
In vain to hoard it up they try'd, Against to-morrow came; It then bred worms and putrify'd, And prov'd their sin and shame.
"Twas daily bread, and would not keep, But must be still renew'd;
Faith should not want a hoard or heap, But trust the Lord for food.
