But oh, what storms await,
The trembling crowds below;
Their pleas are now too late,
This is the time of woe.

The Judge decrees their final doom,
Their portion is "the wrath to come."

CCLXXVI.

1 Cor. xv. 54, &c.

WHEN at the last trumps glorious sound,
The heaven and earth shall shake;
The quick in Christ shall changed be,
The dead to life awake.

When bodies in corruption sown,

In incorruption shine; And immortality clothe men,

Once mortal, now divine.

Then that which heaven-taught Prophets wrote,

Accomplished shall be;

Christ glorified, for swallowed up

Is death in victory.

Hence let the church with cheerful voice,
Triumphant anthems sing;

O grave where is thy victory now?
And where, O death, thy sting?

Thy sting is sin, and conscious guilt
It is that arms thy dart;

The law gives sin its strength and force,
To pierce the sinner's heart.

But thanks to God, our gracious God,
Who slew the foe so dread;
And made his church triumphant in
Jesus their living head.

Then steadfast let us still remain,
Though dangers press around;
And in the work our Lord prescribes,
Yet more and more abound.

Assured that though we labour now,
We labour not in vain ;

For by the certain gift of God,
Eternal life we gain

CCLXXVIII.

Lo! he comes, 'tis Zion's King;

Rejoice ye, whom his grace has saved;

Let the saints together sing

"HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID."

Though in lowly guise a King,
And long his people were enslaved;
Freed by Him they now may sing

66

HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID."

Strike, ye saints, a cheerful string,
Your King for you all dangers braved;
Were ye mute, the stones would sing

[ocr errors]

HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID."

Heav'ns high arches soon shall ring, While angels join with all the saved; And while both together sing

66

HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID."

CCLXXIX.

Rev. i. 7.

Lo, he comes with clouds descending, Once for favoured sinners slain; Thousand thousand saints attending, Swell the triumph of his train : Hallelujah,

Jesus soon shall ever reign.

Every eye shall then behold him,
Robed in dreadful majesty ;

Those who set at nought and sold Him,
Pierced and nailed Him to the tree:
Deeply wailing,
Shall the great Messiah see.

See redemption long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear;
All His saints by man rejected,
They shall meet Him in the air:
Hallelujah,

See the day of God appear.

“ Answer thine own bride and spirit,"
Hasten, Lord, the final doom ;
Come thy new heaven and earth inherit,
Take thy waiting people home:

All creation,

Travails, groans, and bids Thee come.

Yes, Amen, let all adore Thee,
High on thine exalted throne;
Saviour, take the power and glory,
Claim the kingdom for thine own:
O come quickly,

Hallelujah, come, Lord, come.

CCLXXX.

"Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great." Is. liii. 12.

JESUS comes, his conflict over,
Comes to claim his great reward;
Angels round the Victor hover,
Crowding to behold their Lord:
Then haste, ye saints, your tribute bring,
And crown Him everlasting King.

Oh, what honours now await Him,
Friends and foes shall hear his voice;
Tremble, tremble, ye that hate Him,
Ye who love His name rejoice:
Then haste, ye saints, your tribute bring,
And crown Him everlasting King.

David's throne for Him erected,
Now becomes the Victor's seat;
See the Man on earth rejected!
Angels worship at his feet:

Then haste, ye saints, your tribute bring,
And crown Him everlasting King.
