Hark, those bursts of acclamation,
Hark, those loud triumphant words;
Jesus takes the highest station,
Oh, what joy the sight affords;
Crown him, crown him,

[ocr errors]

King of kings," and "Lord of lords."

CCLXXXV.

Mal. iv. 2.

BEHOLD the morning sun appears.
Chasing the night away!

His shining rays all nature cheers,
And gladdens all the day.

Thus, O, thou Sun of righteousness,

Arise upon my soul;

With light, and joy, and comfort bless, And vivify the whole.

Chill'd with the shades of gloomy night,
Darken'd with doubts and fears,
Vile unbelief rejects the light,

Till Christ the Sun appears.

Celestial orb, thy light impart;
Bestow some quick'ning ray;
Illume, and warm this frozen heart,
And guide me through the day.

Let thy bright beams my soul adorn,
Make all my graces grow;
And, in the resurrection morn,
Eternal day bestow.

CCLXXXVI.

Psalm xci. 4, 5.

GLORY to thee, our God, this night, For all the blessings of the light: Keep us, O keep us, King of kings, Beneath thine own Almighty wings!

Sav'd and redeem'd in thy dear Son From all the sins that we have done, Oh may our souls, from bondage free, Enjoy sweet rest and peace in thee!

Give us that faith whereby we may Look forward to the judgment day; And, sav'd from fear, O may we dread The grave as little as our bed!

On thee this night may we repose!
And may sweet sleep our eye-lids close!
Sleep that may us more vig'rous make
To serve our God when we awake.

If in the night we sleepless lie,
Our souls with heav'nly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb our rest;
No pow'rs of darkness us molest.

CCLXXXVII.

Psalm cxxxix. 11.

THROUGH the dark and silent hours
Of the night, preserve us, Lord!
Safely keep both us and ours,
Peace and confidence afford;
We are bold in thee confiding,
Safe beneath thy shade abiding.

Should we never rise again,

Till the morning of that day, When thy gory shall be seen,

When the world shall pass away, May we stand by thee confessed, And with all thy saints be blessed

Since we cannot tell to-day
What to-morrow's dawn may bring,
Saviour, draw our hearts away
Far from ev'ry earthly thing,
Make us in thy service steady,
Always for thy coming ready.

CCLXXXVIII.

1 Sam. vii 12.

Now to grace, as debtors, we,
Spar'd another year to see,
Mercies past would still review;
God hath help'd us hitherto.

'Wake, my soul, thy God to praise,

Raise thy Ebenezer, raise;

Write thereon, thy fears forego,
God hath help'd me hitherto.

Toss'd with tempests we have been,
In the deep Thy footsteps seen;
Sorrows, sins, temptations, through,
God hath help'd us hitherto.

Oft by Zion's foes annoy'd,
Oft cast down, but not destroy'd;
Still to grace the praise is due;
God hath help'd us hitherto.

When our sins deserv'd thy rod,
Thee we found a gracious God;
Lord, thy visits still renew-
Thou hast help'd us hitherto.

Lord, accept our humble praise,
Till, in sweeter nobler lays,
We, with all redeem'd from hell,
Round the throne thy goodness tell.

CCLXXXIX.

Matt. xxviii. 1.

SAFELY through another week
God has brought us on our way,
Let us now a blessing seek

On th' approaching Sabbath-day; Day of all the week the best, Emblem of eternal rest.
