My guilt 'tis of a crimson dye!
And black as hell my various sin!
Yet Jesu's blood doth purify,

And wash my guilty conscience clean.

Tho' ragged, desolate, and bare,

With nought to hide my shame I'm found His righteousness he bids me wear, And throws the noble mantle round.

Clad in this robe, how bright I shine!
Angels might envy such a dress;
Angels have not a robe like mine,
A robe like Jesu's righteousness.

LXII.

Rev. i, 5, 6, 7, 8:

To Jesus Christ who loved his church,
And washed them in his blood,
From all their sins-to Christ who made
Us kings and priests to God.

The first-begotten from the dead,
Prince of earth's kings to be,
All glory, majesty, and might,
Be for eternity.

Behold, behold, with clouds he comes, And every eye shall see;

Then they that pierced him shall mourn, Earth shall be all dismay.

Amen, Lord Jesus, first and last,
And faithful witness too,
Which is, and was, and is to come,
Almighty God-man thou.

Gal. iii. 24.

"Tis not the law of ten commands
On holy Sinai giv'n,

And sent to men by Moses' hands,
Can bring a soul to heav'n :

"Tis not the blood that Aaron spilt,
Nor smoke of sweetest smell,
That can remove a sinner's guilt,
..Or save his soul from hell.

Aaron, the priest, resigns his breath
At God's immediate will;

And in the desert yields to death
On the appointed hill.

And thus, on Jordan's yonder side,
The tribes of Israel stand,
While Moses bow'd his head, and died,
Short of the promis'd land.

Israel, rejoice! for Joshua leads ;
He'll bring the tribes to rest:
So far the Saviour's name exceeds
The ruler and the priest.

LXIV.

SEE Aaron, God's anointed priest,
Within the veil appear,
In robes of mystic meaning drest,
Presenting Israel's prayer.

The plate of gold which crowns his brows,
His holiness describes ;
His breast displays in shining rows

The names of all the tribes.

With the atoning blood he stands

Before the mercy-seat;

And clouds of incense from his hands

Arise with odour sweet.

Urim and Thummim near his heart,
In rich engravings worn,

The sacred light of truth impart,
To teach and to adorn.

Through him the eye of faith descries
A greater priest then he;
Thus Jesus pleads above the skies,
For every saint for me.

He bears the names of all his saints
Deep on his heart engrav'd;
Attentive to the state and wants
Of all his love has sav'd.

In hin a holiness complete,
Light and perfections shine;
And wisdom, grace, and glory meet;
A Saviour all divine.

The blood, which as a priest he bears
For sinners, is his own;

The incense of his pray'rs and tears
Perfumes the holy throne.

G

In him my weary soul has rest,
Though I am weak and vile;
I read my name upon his breast,
And see the Father smile.

Heb. ix. 7-14.

BEHOLD the holy place,
With Aaron entering in,
To make for Israel's race
A sacrifice for sin;
In him the type of Jesus see
Who trod the holy place for me.

Without a victim slain,
As constant as the day,
None could remission gain,

No sins were done away;
Herein the gospel Myst'ry see,
That Christ should set the guilty free.

Ere on the cursed tree

The sinner's debts he paid,

Slain in the great decree,

He stood the cov'nant head;
