H. Stephens, in order to revenge himself on the Monks who had decried Herodotus, on the plea of its being filled with fables, published this work, which proves that the absurdities and vices of the ancients were far exceeded by those of the Clergy of his own time. This work has gone through upwards of thirty editions, all of which differ, and of which the above is the best.

the same, 8vo. calf extra, marbled edges, 158 1848 "A very exact and laborious volume. These "Notes to Herodotus" are, in short, a perpetual running commentary on the Author, and armed with them the student may safely dispense with any other guide."

Times, January 31, 1848. This book must entirely supersede Larcher's, and all other illustrative Notes to Herodotus.

"Even those whose industry may already have led them to the perusal of the whole of the voluminous notes of Baehr, will find it no slight advantage to read them in the excellent and lucid selection which Mr. Turner has made, while they will find in his work a vast amount of additional assistance, which they would seek in vain even in the great German commentator." "This first edition is among the most splendid monuments in the world of Greek erudition and of Greek printing. Heyne has emphatically distinguished these Commentaries of Eustathius as among the most admirable of the text of the poet. They are the fountainhead from which almost inexhaustible supplies may be drawn for the illustration of the great poet."-Dibdin.

"The Commentaries of Eustathius are indeed an immense treasury of the Greek learning; he seems to have amassed the substance of whatever others have written upon the author. There are those who have said, that a judicious abstract of him alone might furnish out sufficient illustrations upon Homer."-Pope.

"As the eye is the organ of fancy, I read Homer with most pleasure in the Glasgow folio. Through that fine medium the Poet's sense appears more beautiful and transparent. Bishop Lowth has said, that he could discover only one error in that accurate edition, the omission of an iota subscribed to a dative."

"This is the most critical edition of Homer which the University of Oxford has published. It is formed on the basis of Clarke's, though the editions of Ernesti and Villoison have been carefully consulted, and the text of the Iliad much improved. The work is printed in a handsome Greek type, and Large Paper copies have been valued at 100 guineas."—Dibdin.

"From the authority of Harwood and Harles, and
from the general estimation in which this work is held
by learned men, we may justly rank it with the very
best editions of Homer. The Glasgow edition, con-
taining, in addition, the prolegomena of Wolf, is a most
beautiful as well as accurately printed work; and the
copies on Large Paper have a magnificent aspect, and
sell for about £12. 12s in handsome binding."-Dibdin
