NOTWITHSTANDING the large number of books that have been published respecting Shakespeare, I am not aware that in any one of them is to be found a complete list of the various early quarto editions of the plays, in which the titles and imprints are given at length. They are not even to be found in Lowndes, or in other bibliographical listą; and I have frequently been at a difficulty when desiring to identify some of the editions, especially of those printed after the appearance of the first folio.
The present list is printed so as to afford room for manuscript notes on the bibliographical peculiarities of each play.
