XXII. And it is hereby enacted, That out of all or any the aids or fupplies aforefaid, there fhall and may be iffued and paid to the commiffioners for building a bridge cross the river Thames, from the city of Westminster to the oppofite fhore, in the county of Surrey, or any feven or more of them, or to fuch person or perfons as fhall be appointed under the hands and feals of the faid commiffioners, or any feven or more of them, to receive the fame, the fum of thirty thousand pounds, without account, other than is directed for other monies raised by virtue of several former acts of parliament, paffed during the reign of his present Majefty, for building the faid bridge, to be applied towards finishing the faid bridge, and to enable the faid commiffioners to perform the other trufts reposed in them.

XXIII. And it is hereby alfo enacted, That out of all or any the aids or fupplies aforefaid, there fhall and may be iffued and jekty to carry applied any fum or fums of money not exceeding five hundred thousand pounds, to enable his Majefty to carry on the war with vigour both by fea and land, and to make good fuch treaties as are or fhall be made with his Majefty's allies, for the year one thousand seven hundred and forty seven.

XXIV. XXVI. And whereas by an act of parliament made and passed in the fixth year of the reign of her late majesty Queen Anne, (intituled, 6 Annæ, c. 11. An act for continuing one half part of the fubfidies of tonnage and poundage, and other duties upon wines, goods, and merchandizes imported, which were granted to the crown in the twelfth year of the reign of King Charles the Second; and for fettling a fund thereby, and by other ways and means, for payment of annuities, not exceeding eighty thoufand pounds per annum, to be fold for raising a further fupply to her Majefty for the service of the year one thoufand feven hundred and eight, and other uses therein expreffed) certain annuities were granted and made payable at the exchequer out of the faid duties by that act continued: and whereas in pursuance of an act made in the fixth year of

6 Geo. 1. c. 4. the reign of his late majesty King George the Firft (intituled, An act for enabling the South Sea company to increase their present capital stock and fund, by redeeming fuch publick debts and incumbrances as are therein mentioned; and for raifing monies to be applied for leffening several of the publick debts and incumbrances; and for calling in the prefent exchequer bills remaining uncancelled, and for making forth new bills in lieu thereof, to be circulated and exchanged upon demand, at or near the exchequer) several of the proprietors of the annuities before mentioned did fubfcribe the fame into the capital ftock of the faid South Sea company, upon the terms in the faid laft recited act mentioned, by means whereof the faid company are become intitled to the yearly fum of forty feven thoufand three hundred twenty feven pounds, thirteen fbillings, and eight pence, for intereft, and charges of management, upon fuch part of the faid annuities fo fubfcribed into their capital: and whereas the monies arifen into the exchequer, of or for the rates and duties by the faid first recited act granted, have proved fo low and deficient, that at the feaft of the birth of our Lord Chrift, one thousand feven hundred and forty fix, there was due and payable to the feveral perfons intitled to fuch part of the faid annuities, as were not fubfcribed to the South Sea company, as alfo to the South Sea company, upon their annuity aforefaid, the fum of eighty five thousand nine hundred fixty eight pounds, twelve fhillings, and three pence three farthings: and whereas no provifion is made by the faid acts, or either of them, for making good fuch deficiency; be it therefore enacted by the authority aforefaid, That out of all or any the aids or fupplies aforefaid, there fhall and may be iffued and applied any 3 d. 3 far- fum or fums of money, not exceeding the fum of eighty five things, to thoufand nine hundred fixty eight pounds, twelve shillings, and make good the annuities three pence three farthings, to make good to the feveral propriepayable to the tors of the faid annuities, as alfo to the faid South Sea company, South Sea the feveral fum or fums of money due to them, to fatisfy their company, &c. respective annuities, payable by the faid acts of parliament, to or for any time before the said feast day of the birth of our Lord Christ, one thousand seven hundred and forty fix.

XXVII. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, That the said aids or fupplies provided as aforefaid (hall not be iffued or applied to any ufe, intent, or purpose whatsoever, other than the ufes and purposes before mentioned, or for the several deficiencies or other payments directed to be fatisfied thereout by any act or acts, or any particular claufe or claufes for that purpose contained in any other act or acts of this present feffion of parliament.

XXVIII. And as to the faid fum of twenty nine thousand nine hundred fourteen pounds, fifteen fhillings, and ten pence, by this act appropriated on account of half-pay, as aforefaid; it is hereby enacted and declared by the authority aforefaid, That the rules herein after prescribed fhall be duly obferved in the apthe applica plication thereof; that is to fay, That no perfon fhall have or tion of the receive any part of the fame, who was a minor, and under the half-pay. age of fixteen years, at the time when the regiment, troop, or

company, in which he served, was reduced; that no person shall have or receive any part of the fame, except fuch perfons who did actual fervice in fome regiment, troop, or company; that no person having any other place or employment of profit, civil or military, under his Majefty, fhall have or receive any part of the said half-pay; that no chaplain of any garrison or regiment, who has any ecclefiaftical benefice in Great Britain, or Ireland, fhall have or receive any part of the faid half-pay; that no perfon fhall have or receive any part of the fame, who has refigned his commiffion, and has had no commiffion fince; that no part of the fame fhall be allowed to any perfon by virtue of any warrant or appointment, except to fuch perfons, who would have been otherwife intitled to the fame as reduced officers; and that no part of the fame shall be allowed to any of the officers of the five regiments of dragoons, and eight regiments of foot, lately disbanded in Ireland, except to fuch as were lately taken off the establishment of half-pay in Great Britain.

XXIX. And whereas by an act of parliament made in the nine- 19Geo.2.c.31. teenth year of his Majefty's reign, (intituled, An act for granting to his Majesty a certain fum of money out of the finking fund, for the service of the year one thousand seven hundred and forty fix; and also for enabling his Majefty to raise a further fum of money for the uses and purposes therein mentioned; and for the further appropriating the fupplies granted in this feffion of parliament; and for making forth duplicates of exchequer bills, lottery tickets, receipts, annuity orders, or other orders, loft, burnt, or otherwise destroyed) several supplies which had been granted to his Majefty, as is therein mentioned, were appropriated to Several ufes and purposes therein expreffed, amongst which any fum or fums of money, not exceeding twenty four thousand feven hundred and one pounds, feven fillings, and fix pence, was appropriated to be paid to the reduced officers of his Majefty's land forces and marines, fubjet nevertheless to fuch rules to be observed in the application of the faid half-pay, as in and by the aforesaid act were prefcribed in that behalf; now it is hereby provided, enacted, and declared by the authority aforefaid, That fo much of the faid fum of twenty four thousand seven hundred and one pounds, seven fhillings, The furplus of and fixpence, as is or fhall be more than fufficient to fatisfy the last year's half-pay, to faid reduced officers, according to the rules prescribed by the faid be applied to act to be observed in the application thereof, or any part of fuch fuch objects as overplus, fhall or may be difpofed of to fuch officers who are his Majesty maimed or loft their limbs in the late wars, or fuch others, as by reafon of their long fervice, or otherwife, his Majefty fhall judge to be proper objects of charity; or to the widows or children of fuch officers, according to fuch warrant or warrants, under his Majefty's royal fign manual, as fhall be figned in that behalf; any thing in this act, or the faid former act to the contrary notwithstanding.

And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, That the bounties on the exportation of British and Irish coarfe linens, fhall continue to be paid under the regulations of the acts linens conti- of the fifteenth, fixteenth, and eighteenth years of his Majesty's 15Geo.2.0.29. reign; and that the fame fhall be paid out of fuch part of the 18Geo.2.c.25. old fubfidy, as is applicable to the payment of incidents; and that an account thereof be laid before the house of commons every feffion of parliament, in order to replacing the fame out of the next aids to be granted in parliament.

CAP. XXXVII.

An att for the cafe of fheriffs with regard to the return of

OR the cafe of fheriffs with regard to the return of process, be it enacted by the King's moft excellent majefty, by and with the advice and confent of the lords fpiritual and temporal, and commons in this prefent parliament affembled, and by the authority of the fame, That from and after the twenty ninth ecuted, to be day of September, one thousand feven hundred and forty feven, turned over to all theriffs of any county, city, liberty, divifion, town corporate, the fucceeding or place, fhall, at the expiration of their office, turn over to the Aeriff; fucceeding theriff, by indenture and schedule, all fuch writs and procefs as fhall remain in their hands unexecuted, who fhall duly execute and return the fame; and in cafe any fuch sheriff fhall refuse or neglect to turn over fuch procefs, in manner aforemaking good faid, every fuch theriff fo neglecting or refufing, thall be liable to make fuch fatisfaction, by damages and cofts, to the party aggrieved, as he, she, or they fhall fuftain by fuch neglect or
