MY DEAR SIR,

Your well known desire to

encourage literary pursuits amongst the Medical Officers of the Army, emboldened me to solicit your countenance for this small work, which I almost feared to make public on its own merits; but while wishing for the honour of connecting your name with these pages, a difficulty suggested itself that requires a word or two in explanation. It might be imagined that I wished to render you responsible for all the views advanced by me on the subject of the Examination of Recruits; this is by no means the case. A discretionary power is allowed to Medical Officers, and controversy frequently arises
