to thunder out an excommunication to stem the growing evil, and cut off from the fociety of feformation blafted branches, devoured and eat up by pride, envy, hatred, luft, gluttony, anger, backbiting, fcorning, drunkards, faithlefs, blafphemous, treacherous, fcandalous, altering the fenfe and meaning, in their tranflating the fcriptures, fo as to deceive the ignorant, clipping, feparating, adding and taking away from the fame; fo that their tranflation in numberless texts are the reverfe of the original, as the whole crew are the reverse of their beft of fathers, whofe excommunication remains in full force at this day and they as obdurate and har dened as ever.

Calv. Luther, in his true character, as is proved both by the fynods, common hiftory, and his own productions and hand-writing now produced, was violent, rèftlefs, disobedient, could not bear reproof, luftful, which fifter Cate gives ample teftimony of, (himfelf a priest and the a nun) proud, oppofing every authority both spiritual and temporal, continually changing, wavering, unfettled, unhappy, tampering with Satan, as himself declared, from whom he learned most of his edification and religion, Thefe, with many other effential and fpiritual reafons, obliged our Holy Father to feparate and preferve himself and family from the contagion of a peft-hofpital, which gangrene, or fpiritual leprofy, rendered it abfolutely neceffary to fly out of Babylon. We have fcripture for our juftification. The Jews, by commandment, were ordered when the leprofy

appeared to fhew the infection to the priest, who, upon examination, pronounced fentence, if dangerous, to be feparated and put without the camp, and there remain until they were clean, and then not return until the priest pronounced them clean. This being proved, Luther's excommunication iffues from a diftempered mind, difabled and fick brain, destitute and void, either of priority or authority, whereas the excommunication of father Calvin was, and remains in full force; he, as I proved, was put into legal and full poffeffion, both of the birthright and bleffing; fo that his pofte tity reigns in Sion.

[blocks in formation]

Luth. As were the fheep of Amelek in the ears of the prophet Samuel.

Mf. Thefe are the lambs you wish, a peftiferous and mischievous flock; endowed with the quality of goats, you have removed the veil. I will no longer difpute your claim.

Calv. Our hereditable right claimed and obtained, by our virginal purity, unknown to the world, until the brightnefs of Sion, big with great defigus, broke through; and as the fun beams on Jonas's head, when fent to announce vengeance on the Ninevites, vehemently beat ppon the head of Calvin, the apostles tafted a glimmer or twilight of this great fun, being the infant ftate of Sion; but when, according to the fullness of time, fifteen hundred years from the apostles, a full time, was accomplished, Calvin, of all the children of man, was found worthy to be the first-born of the fpirit, to remove the mift of material webs and every corporal image, or idea, from the fouls or minds of his elect children; fo that he perfected and did away the old man by the fpirit, as the Gourd covering Jonah was by the worm that fmote it.

Luth. You fuppofe yourselves to be fo po lifhed and refined by the fpirit that no addition or amendment can be added.

Mof. As the covenant of the Meffiah was imperfect, no doubt but Calvin has alfo fomething to be amended, reformed, transformed, trimmed and tranfcended; for if you place yourselves to difpute, doubt, contradict, gain fay and vilify Jefus Chrift, whom you confefs

to be your Lord and judge, how is it to be fuppofed that an apoftate priest and a profligate rafcal can gain your confidence and influence? your distempered and stiff necks and ftony hearts never will fubmit to fo low a humiliation, a fordid faction!

Calv. The veil ftifles and diffipates your fpirit fo that you fee darkly, otherwife you wouldknow the flight of the fpirit; but this is a language you know not, being an Ifraelite.

Luth. If Mofes has the mishap to be an If raelite, I am your elder brother, of the first trumpet of reconciliation, and am at all times ready to judge and decide your fcruples in any manner, caufe, or thing whatsoever; you have therefore liberty to answer for thyself.

Mof. You are permitted by your judge?

Calv. Curfed is he that putteth his truft in man, faith the fcripture. My truft, as a Calvinift, is in the spirit who enlightens and gives us utterance. We form no image or idea whatfoever, therefore stand unconcerned with material objects or things. Man is an inanimate being, formed out of matter, fenfeless in his inferior man. The fuperior, or fpiritual man, is an independent and intelligent intellectual being, not at all fubject to controul, but to rule. It is this fpiritual fuperiority Calvinism contends for. These are the children of light, fweet lambs of Sion, inhabitants of New Je rufalem, and heirs of the new covenant, who carry the mark on their foreheads of spiritual virginity, and fing a new canticle which no other can fing or understand. This being un

derflood of our spiritual man, I will now expofe your earthly and outward man, what feparated us.

Luth. I hope, Mr. Mofes, we have fully explained our tenets in our fpiritual warfare, too convincing to admit of a doubt, the ne. ceffity of taking the reins of government, excommunicating the pope, and placing our fa ther Luther in the chair of Peter; and that after every lenient and perfuafive means proved abortive,
