and reprobation of Judas, one of the twelve apostles. Matthew 26th chapter. "And it came to pafs, when Jefus had ended all these words, he faid to his difciples: You know that after two days fhall be the Pafch, and the Son of man fhall be delivered up to be crucified: then were gathered together the chief priests and the ancients of the people into the palace of the high-prieft, who was called Caiphas; and they confulted together, that by fubtlety they might apprehend Jefus and put him to death. Then went one of the twelve, who was called Judas Ifcariot, to the chief priests, and he faid to them; What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? But they appointed him thirty pieces of filver, and from thenceforth he fought opportunity to betray him. And on the first day of the Azymes the difciples came to Jefus, faying; Where wilt thou that we prepare for to eat the Pasch? But Jefus faid, Go ye into the city to a certain man, and fay to him; The Mafter faith, my time is near at hand, I will keep the Pafch at thy house with my difciples. And the difciples did as Jefus had appointed them, and they prepared the Pafch. Now when it was evening, he fat down with his twelve difciples, and whilst they were eating, he faid; Amen, I fay to you, that one of you is about to betray me. And they

being very much troubled, began every one to fay, Is it I, Lord? But he answering, faid; He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the fame fhall betray me. The fon of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him; but woe

to that man, by whom the son of man fhall be betrayed; it were better for that man if he had not been born. And Judas that betrayed him, anfwering, faid; Is it I, Rabbi? He faith to him, Thou haft faid it. And while they were at fupper, Jefus took bread, and bleffed, and broke, and gave to his difciples, and faid, This is my Body. And taking the chalice he gave thanks; and gave to them, faying, Drink ye all of this; for This is my Blood of the New Teftament, which fhall be shed for many for the remiffion of fins. And when they had fung a hymn, they went out to mount Olivet. Then Jefus faith to them; All you fhall be fcandalized in me this night for it is written, I will strike the fhepherd, and the sheep of the flock fhall be difperfed. But after I fhall be rifen, I will go before you into Galilee. Then Jefus came with them to a country place, which is called Gethfemani, and he faid to his difciples; Sit you here, till I go yonder, and pray. And taking with him Peter and the two fons of Zebedee, he began to grow forrowful and to be fad. Then he faith to them; My foul is forrowful even unto death; stay you here, and watch with me. And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying, and faying, O my Father, if it is poffible, let this chalice pafs from me; neverthelefs, not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh to his difciples and findeth them afleep, and he faith to Peter; What? could you not watch one hour with me? watch ye and pray, that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.

Again, he went the fecond time and prayed, faying; O my Father, if this chalice may not pafs away but I muft drink it, thy will be done. And he cometh again, and findeth them asleep, for their eyes were heavy; and leaving them, he went away again, and he prayed the third time, faying the fame words. Then he cometh to his difciples, and faith to them; Sleep on now, and take your reft; behold the hour is at hand, and the son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of finners. Rife, let us go; behold he is at hand that will betray me. As he yet fpoke, behold Judas one of the twelve came, and with him a great multitude with fwords and clubs, fent from the chief priefts and the an-. cients of the people; and he that betrayed him, gave them a fign, faying, Whomfoever I fhall kifs, that is he, hold him faft. And forthwith coming to Jefus, he said, Hail, Rabbi, and he kiffed him. And Jefus faid to him, Friend, whereto art thou come? Then they came up, and laid hands on Jefus, and held him. In that fame hour Jesus said to the multitudes; You are come out as against a robber with fwords and clubs to apprehend me; I fat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you laid not hands. on me. Now all this was done, that the fcriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then the difciples all leaving him fled away; but they holding Jefus led him to Caiphas the highprieft, where the fcribes and the ancients were affembled. Now the chief priests and the whole council fought falfe witness against Jefus, that they might put him to death; and they found Y 2

none,

none, though many falfe witneffes had come in; and laft of all there came two falfe witneffes, and they faid; This man faid, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and in three days to rebuild it. And the high-prieft rifing, faid to him, Answereft thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee? But Jefus held his peace. And the high-priest said to him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou be the Chrift the Son of God? Jesus faith to him, Thou haft faid it. Nevertheless, I fay to you, hereafter you shall see the son of man fitting on the right-hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high-prieft rent his garments, faying, He hath blafphemed, what further need have we of witneffes? Behold now you have heard the blafphemy, what think you? but they anfwering, faid, He is guilty of death. Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him, and others ftruck his face with the palms of their hands, faying, Prophecy unto us, O Chrift; who is he that ftruck thee? The traitor Judas is noted in another Pfalm, which is taken notice of by Peter in the firft chapter of the Acts. "In those days, Peter rifing up in the midst of the brethren, faid, (now the number of perfons together, was about one hundred and twenty) Men brethren, the fcripture muft needs be fulfilled, which the Holy Ghoft fpoke before by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was the leader of them that apprehended Jefus,. who was numbered with us, and obtained part of this miniftry. And he indeed hath poffeffed

a field of the reward of iniquity, and being hanged burst asunder in the midft, and all his bowels gufhed out; and it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerufalem; so that the fame field was called in their tongue Haceldama, that is to fay, the field of blood, as it is written in the book of Pfalms; "Let their habitation become defolate, and let there be none to dwell therein; and his bifhoprick let another take," which was alloted to Matthias in the place of Judas.

Boy. 69th Pfalm. "Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my foul. I fink in deep mire, where there is no ftanding; I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. I am weary of my crying; my throat is dried; my eyes fail while I wait for my God. They that hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head; they that would destroy. me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty; then I restored that which I took not away. O God, thou knoweft my foolishness, and my fins are not hid from thee. Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord of Hofts, be afhamed for my fake; let not those that seek thee, be confounded for my fake, O God of Ifrael. Because for thy fake I have borne reproach; fhame has covered my face. I am become a ftranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee, are fallen upon me. When I wept, and chaftened my foul with fafting, that was to my reproach. I made fackcloth alfo my
