lieve. Take my common-prayer book, and at the head you will read two acts as a fpecimen of many more ftatutes for the uniformity and univerfality of our Sion, so that there may be one religion, both in prayer and facraments, without this conformity; you will there fee the penalties to be inflicted. The ift act was enacted under our gracious fovereign queen Eli zabeth, the other under our gracious fovereign Charles the Second. So help me God. They were happy days. So be it.

TENTH CONFERENCE.

Scene changes. Mofes, Boy, and Notaries.

Moses. M

ESSIAH confirmed his covenant with many for one week, caufed the facrifice and oblation to cease, and Himself cut off, and from that period defolation. Two parts of this prophecy are confirmed and remain confirmed at this day. Ifrael has been without temple or facrifice, and themselves drove out and abandoned by their God, fcattered throughout all nations, hated and defpifed, and their country defolate. Where their temple stood is placed the abomination of defolation, the worship of the Impoftor Mahomet. This part of the prophecy ftands open to the whole world, and this from the very time marked and pointed out to us by our fcriptures that the Meffiah fhould come, from which point of time you date your chriftianity. But, alas! where fhall Ifrael fearch for the fulfilling of the other two parts of this prophecy? where is the Meffiah that is cut off, or, where are the men that He confirmed His covenant with?

Boy. Jefus Chrift is the Meffiah foretold by all the prophets who at the appointed time came into the world and manifefted Himself to Ifrael and the world. He entered on His Divine Miffion at the age of thirty, and confirmed His covenant, according to the prophecy, with many, and in the middle of the week he was cut off, which was the three years He was on

His Miffion, when you cut him off from the earth, hanging the Lord of Life on a tree. You have rejected him and he has rejected you. You accufed him of blafphemy against God and your temple and being an impoftor, and he has fhewed himself to be that God you accused him of blafpheming, and fulfilled the prophecy in all its parts: abrogated, annulled, repealed, and tranflated His old covenant into the fecond, and new covenant, which He promised from the beginning, and throughout His fcriptures, had your temple destroyed, and on the ground on which your temple ftood was erected a heathen, and at this day, a Mahometan temple, or place of worship. He appointed and confirmed twelve bishops, known by the name of the apoftles; one of the twelve He appointed His Vicar, whom he invested with ample power as head and chief, which has come down by a regular fucceffion from St. Peter, who was the first appointed and feated his chair in Rome to the prefent time. He appointed feventy others alfo. After His Refurrection, he appeared at different times for forty days, when he afcended to heaven in the fight of one hundred and twenty. He appeared once to five hundred brethren, and, no doubt, many others. A few days after His Afcenfion, Peter's first fermon added three thousand difciples; and a few days after, they increased to five thoufand, and in a fhort period the new covenant was extended to all parts of the earth. Their found hath gone forth into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

[blocks in formation]

Mofes. The Almighty gave Ifrael a law, and by that law Jefus Chrift was condemned to die. Deuteronomy 18th chapter. But the prophet which shall prefume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that fball Speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet fhall die.

Boy. But if thou fay in thy heart, how fhall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken? When a prophet fpeaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it préfumptuously, thou fhalt not be afraid of him. What we have recited is the latter part of the prophecy, which is the rock of offence to the house of Ifrael, on which they have split, and plunged themselves in the abyss of deftruction; we will begin with the first part and fo proceed to this ftumbling ftone and rock of offence.

The Lord fpake unto Mofes in these words: I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and I will put My words into his mouth, and he ball Speak unto them all that I fhall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words, which be fhall Speak in My name, I will require it of him. This prophecy, agreed by all, relates to the Meffiah, who was to be a fecond legiflator, or law-giver, to confirm and establish a new covenant.

Mofes. What you advance is juft; for if the firft remained, why a fecond?

Boy.

Boy. The time of his coming is agreed to be according to the fcripture, when Jefus Chrift appeared.

Mofes. Univerfal agreement of the whole world, both Jews and Gentiles.

Boy. He was prophecied to be of the stock of David. and confequently of the tribe of Judah.

Mofes. The fcriptures declare it.

Boy. You grant these privileges to Jesus Christ.

Mofes. Ifrael never difputed these privileges, they were proved by the univerfal tax of Auguftus, when every perfon was obliged to repair to the place of their nativity to answer perfonally, when his parents repaired to the city (as ftock) of David; for the tribes of Ifrael kept, from the beginning, each tribe and each family a regular regifter, to preferve privileges and inconfufion.

Boy. We have, in the reign of the emperor Vefpafian, an Inquiry for the for the kindred of David, after the taking of Jerufalem; alfo by the emperor Domitian, when the nephews of Jude, apostle, was brought before him, who were near relations of Jefus Chrift, and being examined by the emperor, declared themselves defcendants of David, and that the kingdom of Chrift was celeftial and not terreftrial: for the emperors were, as Herod, afraid of the power of Chrift, taking the prophecies in the terrestrial sense, as Ifrael has ever done.

Mofes. Ifrael ever has, and at this day expect their Meffiah to appear, the high and mighty Lord
