them, faying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us: be came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice;

by committing fo foul a fin as will be to our dishonour.

15. And it came to pass, when be heard that I lifted up my voice, and cried, that he left bis garment with me, and fled, and got him out.

16. And the laid up his garment by her, untill his lord came home.

17. And she spake unto him according to thefe words, faying, The Hebrew fervant which thou haft brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me.

18. And it came to pass, as I lift up my voice, and cried, that be left his garment with me, and fled out. 19. And it came to pass, when his mafter heard the words of bis wife which the spake unto him, faying, After this manner did thy fervant to me, that his wrath was kindled.

20. And fofeph's master took bim, and put him into the prifon, a place where the king's prisoners were bound and be was there in the prison.

Fofeph, and fhewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the fight of the keeper of the prifon.

20. Into prifon: i.e. Into the Pit or Dungeon of it. Compare ch. 40.15.

21. Gave him fayour: This was after fome time, as appears from ch.40.15. See Pf. 105. 18, 19.

22. And the keeper of the prifon committed to Jofeph's hand all the prifoners that were in the prifon, and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

23. The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand, because the LORD was with him and that which he did, the LORD made it to profper.

The ARGUMENT.

The Butler and Baker of Pharaoh are caft into the Prifon where Jofeph was. He interpreteth their Dreams, The Ingratitude of the Butler.

I.

ND it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt, and his baker bad offended their lord the king of Egypt.

2. And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

3. And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prifon, the place where Jofeph was bound.

3. In ward: Or, Cuftody, as the HeCaptain of the guard: brew word imports.

This Office did beprobably Jofeph was

long to Potiphar, (ch. 37. 36.) and caft into a Prifon belonging to him, where the Keeper of the Prifon might have information of the wrong which was done him. Prifon: Seech. 39. 20. Was bound: Or, bad been bound, and where he was still confined.

9. And the chief butler told his dream to Jofeph, and faid unto him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before

me;

10. And in the vine were three branches, and it was as though it budded, and her bloffoms shot forth, and the clufters thereof brought forth ripe grapes.

11. And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, and preffed them into Pharaoh's cup': and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

12. And Jofeph faid unto him, This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days;

13. Yet within three days fhall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and refore thee unto thy place, and thou fhalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou waft his butler.

The Land of Canaan where Abraham the Hebrew dwelt, (ch. 14. 13.) and which God promifed to his pofterity. I have done nothing: i. e. Nothing amifs, which deferves this confinement.

16. when the chief baker faw that the interpretation was good, be faid unto Jofeph, I also was in my dream, and behold, I had three white baskets on my head.

17. And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bake-meats for Pharaoh, and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.

18. And Jofeph answered, and faid, This is the interpretation thereof the three baskets are three days. 19. Yet within three days fhall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and fhall bang thee on a tree, and the birds fhall eat thy flesh from off thee.

19. From off thee: By taking it from thee. Pharaoh removed him from his Office, and perhaps alfo took off his head

before his body was hanged on a Tree.

20. And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birth-day, that he made a feast unto all his fervants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler, and of the chief baker among his fervants.

21. And he restored the chief butler unto his butlerpip again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's band. 22. But be hanged the chief baker, as fofeph had in terpreted to them.

23. Yet did not the chief butler remember Jofeph, but forgas him.

23. Forgat him : Jofeph after this continued two years in Prifon, ch.41. 1.

The ARGUMENT.

The two Dreams of Pharaoh are interpreted by Jofeph who alfo advifeth Pharaoh what he should do. Jofeph is highly advanced by Pharaoh. Unto Jofeph are born Manaffeh and Ephraim. The beginning of the Fa mine fore-told by Jofeph.

ND it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed and behold, he ftood by the river.

5. And he slept, and dreamed the fecond time and behold, Seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good.
