Hence it is evident

that Jacob was about Ninety years old when Jofeph was born. Evil: Though Jacob in fome refpect were a profperous Man, yet he met with many Evils. He fled from Efau, ferved Laban Twenty years: He was defeated in his hope of Rachel, and fhe was barren alfo: He fled from Laban, feared Efau, halted: He was afflicted in Dinah, in Simeon and Levi, and in Reuben, and upon the score of Jofeph; In the Sons of Judah and in Thamar; Befides the death of Rachel, and the fending away of Benjamin. Have not attained, &c. Abraham lived an Hundred feventy five years, and Ifaac an Hundred and eighty, Gen. 25.7. and ch. 35. 28.

10: And Jacob bleffed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

11. And Jofeph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a poffeffion in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the Land of Ramefes, as Pharaoh bad commanded.

12. And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's houshold with bread, according to their families.

13. And there was no bread in all the land for the famine was very fore, fo that the land of Egypt, and all the land of Canaan fainted by reafon of the famine.

10. Blessed: At his going out, as at his coming in. See the Note on v.7.

11. Land of Ramefes: So called here by Anticipation; the Ifraelites built a City

of that Name afterward, Exod.1.11. and 12.37.

12. According to their families: Or, as a little Child is

ones.

13. Land of Egypt: i. e. The People of the Land, as the Chaldee hath it.

14. And

14. And Jofeph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought and Jofeph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

15. And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Jofeph, and said, Give us bread for why should we die in thy prefence? for the money faileth.

16. And Jofeph faid, Give your cattel; and I will give you for your cattel, if money fail.

17. And they brought their 17. Fed them: cattel unto Jofeph: and Jofeph Heb. Led them. gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattel of the herds, and for the affes; and he fed them with bread, for all their cattel, for that year.

18. When that year was ended, they came unto him the fecond year, and faid unto him, we will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent, my lord alfo hath our herds of cattel; there is not ought left in the fight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands.

18. Second year: i. e. The year after, and not the fecond year of the feven years famine.

19. Wherefore fhall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be fervants unto Pharaoh: and give us feed, that we may live and not die, that the land be not defolate.

20. And Jofeph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians fold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: fo the land became Pha

raoh's.

21. And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt, even to the other end thereof.

21. He removed them; The better to

People; fays Jofephus: And alfo it was a good means to prevent their Sedition, which they would be tempted to, if they had continued in their old Patrimonies.

22. Onely the land of the priests bought he not for the priests had a portion affigned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they fold not their lands.

of Priefts here: And fo does Jofephus, and the Syriack Verfion of this place: And what is here faid of the Priviledge 1 of the Priefts, is confirmed by what we read to the fame purpose in the Second Book of Herodotus.

23. Then Jofeph faid unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day, and your land for Pharaoh : lo, here is feed for you, and ye shall fow the land.

24. And it shall come to pass in the increafe, that you shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts fhall be your own, for feed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your houfholds, and for food for your little ones.

25. And they faid, Thou haft faved our lives: let us find grace in the fight of my lord, and we will be Pharaob's fervants.

26. And Jofeph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh fhould have the fifth part; except the land of the Priests onely, which became not Pharaoh's.
