tali to an Hind let loofe, Jofeph to a fruitfull Bough, or Tree planted by the Waters, fo Benjamin is fitly compared to a ravenous Wolf for his War-like Courage and Succefs a-. gainft his Enemies; an account of which we have Judg. 20 and 21. Efth. 2. 5. and ch. 9. Judg. 3. 15.

28. All these are the twelve tribes of Ifrael: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and bleffed them; every one according to his bleffing he blessed them.

28. Twelve tribes: They are confidered here with refpect to their future Inheritance, and Levi not inheriting as the rest did, they are faid to be twelve. Befides, they are in facob's words here, spoken of as Twelve: For though Levi be mentioned here exprefsly, yet Ephraim and Manaffeh are not expressly mentioned, but are bleffed in Jofeph. They are here called twelve Tribes rather than Perfons or Sons of Jacob, because they are not here fo much confidered as fingle Perfons, as they are in their Pofterity and several Habitations. Bleffed them: Even Reuben, Simeon and Levi, who are reprehended by their Father, yet received a Bleffing in being taken in as Heads of their Tribes and Inheritors of the promised Land: And though Reuben lost the priviledges of the First-born, and Simeon and Levi were scattered, yet none of them were excluded the Land of Canaan, and deprived of any fhare of it. And very probable it is, that Jacob difmiffed all his Sons with a general Benediction. According to, &c. As God directed him and faw meet.

29. Bury me: See ch.47.30.

29. And he charged them and faid unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers, in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30. In the cave that is in the

field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite, for a poffeffion of a burying place.

30. In the cave, &c. This very parti the Place, as it might cular defcription of be needfull to them, who had been long

abfent from that

Country where it was, so it speaks Jacob very follicitous a

bout

bout this matter; and it put them in mind of returning to their Country which God had promised.

31. (There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah.)

32. The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein, was from the children of Heth.

33. And when Jacob had made an end of commanding bis fons, be gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
