BANNÄTYNE CLUB PUBLICATIONS, 140 vols. 4to. plates, facfimiles, &c. 200 guineas. Edinburgh, 1823-57 1810 A complete fet of the Publications of this Club, which was founded by Sir Walter Scott for the purpose of printing works illuftrative of the History, Antiquities, and Literature of Scotland. In addition to thofe published at the expense of the Club, it comprises many very important works contributed at the private expenfe (amounting in fome cafes to Several hundred pounds) of its members; as, for example, the works prefented by the Dukes of Buccleuch, Buckingham, Roxburgh, and Sutherland, Earls Ellesmere, and Minto, Lords Dundrennan, Ivory, Lyndsay, and Rutherfurd, the Count de Flahault, Sir David Dundas, Sir Walter Scott, &c. who, as well as many others that could be named, being deeply interested in the history of their country, have, with a princely liberality, defrayed the cost of printing documents which otherwife could not have been published, and have thus placed beyond the reach of any casualty, records interesting not only to the Antiquary, but also to the Civil and Ecclefiaftical Hiftorian. Thefe publications form the most valuable feries of inedited historical papers ever printed in this country, and are, moreover, furnished with valuable historical notes and illuftrations by Meffrs. Cofmo Innes, David Laing, Thomas Thomson, and the feveral editors. A complete set must ever be of great rarity, and of very uncommon occurrence, as the impreffion of most of the works was limited to the number of the members of the Club, which originally was but 31, though fubfequently increased to 100. |
