1402 EXERCITATIO de Causis Remediisque Dissidiorum, authore T. S. 4to. Is 6d Oxon. 1675 1403 EXLEY'S (Tho.) Richardo, Wunibaldo, Willibaldo, Walpurga, una cum duobus observationum libris et catalogo historico, omnium Episcoporum Eystettensium, Jacobo Gretsero, auctore, 4to. calf, neat, RARE, 16s Ingolstadii, 1617

A very scarce and curious book relating to ecclesiastical history. These four Saxon Tutelar saints, St. Richard the father, his two sons, St. Wunibald and St. Willibald, and his daughter, St. Walpurga, were Anglo-Saxons, and of the blood royal. Cardinal Baronius informs us, that the sister of queen Offa was mother to St. Richard, and "it is probable," says Father Cressy," that this Richard was king of the West-Saxons, immediately after King Ina, for though Ethelard be the only king named as his successor, yet the venerable Bede says, that King Ina left his kingdom to several young princes, among whom St. Richard was one; but Ethelard, being a prince of high spirit, seems to have excluded the rest, together with St. Richard." According to Baronius, this King Richard, (the father of the boly brethren, St. Wunibald and St. Willebald, and of their sister, St. Walpurga, a religious virgin) was a voluntary exile from his country," "he quitted," says he," a king's crown for a life eternal, put off the royal purple to take a mean habit, and visited the shrines of the saints at Rome." He died at Lucca, an. 722, and is styled in the Roman Martyrology, 'St. Richard, king of the English.' In the two books of annotations to the above curious volume by Jacob Gretser, we have a poetical piece, entitled, " Rythmi Medebardi de miraculis S. Walpurgæ, quæ Wolfardus Hasenrieta'nus IV. libris complexus est, nunc primum ex MS. Codice Bibliothecæ Episcopalis Estettensis publicati.—Hymni SS. Willebaldi et Walpurgæ ;" and this volume concludes with a "Catalogo-Historico omnium Episcoporum Eystettensium," which catalogue contains the lives of all the early saints of this episcopal church.
