6. The Statutes: Prohemium J. Rastell. The Abbreviation of Statutes translated out of French into English by John Rastall. 4to., J. Rastell, 1517, 1519; 8vo., 1520; 8vo., 1527 (271 printed leaves); 8vo.

1528

The Prohemium deals with the propriety of the laws being published in English.

This is said to be the first Abridgment of the Statutes printed in England. It appears to be a translation with additions of the "Abridgment des Statutes vieux," but contains several ancient Statutes, Ordinances, etc., not extant in any edition of the Statutes at large, and in some instances more complete transcripts of several Acts that are commonly printed in Statutes at large. The Statutes are distributed under alphabetical titles, and are given both in English and their original language, because "many termes and wordes be there in divers Statutes, both in Latine and in French which be very hard to translate aptly into English." The translation appears to have been executed with superior care and industry." 3 Dib. Typ. Art. 83; Barring Obs. 264; Int. Stat. Realm, 1810; 4 Reeves, 418; Brooke, 169; Marvin's Leg. Bib.

Whewell describes the 1654 translation as a small and worthless abridgment." Campbell's edition has "notes and illustrations from the best political and legal writers." Whewell's edition contains an abridged translation with the notes of the author, Barbeyrac and others; he states that the notes of Barbeyrac are excellent, but those of Gronovius are of very little value.
