With longing eyes, and lifted hands,
We flock around thy gate.

2 Oh! shed abroad that choicest gift,-
Thy Spirit from above,

To cheer our eyes with sacred light.
And fire our hearts with love.

3 Blest earnest of eternal joy!
Declare our sins forgiven:
And bear, with energy divine,

Our raptured thoughts to heaven.
4 Diffuse, O God! thy copious showers,
That earth its fruit may yield,
And change the barren wilderness,
To Carmel's flowery field.

The Outpouring of the Spirit.

1 LET songs of praises fill the sky!
Christ, our ascended Lord,

Sends down his Spirit, from on high,
According to his word.

2 The Spirit, by his heavenly breath,
New life creates within:

He quickens sinners, from the death
Of trespasses and sin.

3 The things of Christ the Spirit takes,
And to our heart reveals:
Our bodies he his temple makes,
And our redemption seals.

4 Come, Holy Spirit! from above,
With thy celestial fire;

Come, and, with flames of zeal and love,
Our hearts and tongues inspire.

218. The Operations of the Holy Spirit. 1 ETERNAL Spirit! we confess,

And sing the wonders of thy grace;
Thy power conveys our blessings down,
From God, the Father, and the Son.

2 Enlightened by thy heavenly ray,
Our shades and darkness turn to day;

Thine inward teachings make us know
Our danger, and our refuge too.
3 Thy power and glory work within,
And break the chains of reigning sin;
Do our imperious lusts subdue,

And form our wretched hearts anew.
4 The troubled conscience knows thy voice;
Thy cheering words awake our joys;
Thy words allay the stormy wind,
And calm the surges of the mind.

219. Prayer for the promised Spirit.
1 ENTHRONED on high, almighty Lord!
The Holy Ghost send down:
Fulfill in us thy faithful word,
And all thy mercies crown.

2 Though, on our heads, no tongues of fire
Their wondrous powers impart,
Grant, Saviour! what we more desire,
Thy Spirit in our heart.

3 Spirit of life, and light, and love!
Thy heavenly influence give;
Quicken our souls-born from above-
In Christ, that we may live.

4 To our benighted minds reveal
The glories of his grace,

And bring us, where no clouds conceal
The brightness of his face.

5 His love within us shed abroad,-
Life's ever-springing well,-
Till God in us, and we in God,
In love eternal dwell.

Regeneration by the Spirit.

1 NOT all the outward forms on earth,
Nor rites that God has given;

Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,
Can raise a soul to heaven.

2 The sovereign will of God alone

Creates us heirs of

grace,

Born in the image of his Son,

A new peculiar race.

3 The Spirit, like some heavenly wind,
Breathes on the sons of flesh;
Creates anew the carnal mind,
And forms the man afresh.

4 Our quickened souls awake, and rise,
From the long sleep of death:
On heavenly things we fix our eyes,
And praise employs our breath.

TRINITY.

6s and 4s.

Invocation.

1 COME thou almighty King!
Help us thy name to sing,
Help us to praise :
Father! all-glorious,

O'er all victorious.

Come, and reign over us,
Ancient of days!

2 Come, thon incarnate Word!

Gird on thy mighty sword;
Our prayer attend:
Come, and thy people bless,
And give thy word success;
Spirit of holiness!

On us descend.

3 Come, holy Comforter!
Thy sacred witness bear,
In this glad hour:
Thou, who almighty art,
Now rule in every heart,
And ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of power!

4 To the great One in Three,
The highest praises be,
Hence evermore!

His sovereign majesty
May we in glory see,
And to eternity

Love and adore.

C. M.

Praise to the Godhead.

1 LET them neglect thy glory, Lord!
Who never knew thy grace;

But our loud songs shall still record
The wonders of thy praise.

2 We raise our shouts, O God! to thee,
And send them to thy throne;
All glory to th' united Three,-
The undivided One.

3 'T was he-and we'll adore his nameThat formed us by a word;

'Tis he restores our ruined frame ;-
Salvation to the Lord!

4 Hosanna! let the earth and skies
Repeat the joyful sound;

Rocks, hills, and vales reflect the voice,
In one eternal round.

Praise to the Trinity.

1 FATHER of glory! to thy name
Immortal praise we give,

Who dost an act of grace proclaim,
And bid us rebels live.

2 Immortal honor to the Son,

Who makes thine anger cease;-
Our lives he ransomed with his own,
And died to make our peace.

3 To thine almighty Spirit be
Immortal glory given;

Whose influence brings us near to thee,
And trains us up for heaven.

4 Let men, with their united voice,
Adore th' eternal God,

And spread his honors and their joys,
Through nations far abroad.

5 Let faith, and love, and duty join
One general song to raise;

Let saints, in earth and heaven, combine,
In harmony and praise.

Prayer to the Trinity.

i FATHER of heaven! whose love profound
A ransom for our souls hath found,-
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy pard'ning love extend.
2 Almighty Son-incarnate Word-
Our prophet, priest, redeemer, Lord!
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy saving grace extend.
3 Eternal Spirit! by whose breath
The soul is raised from sin and death,-
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy quickening power extend.
4 Jehovah!-Father, Spirit, Son!-
Mysterious Godhead-Three in One!
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
Grace, pardon, life, to us extend.

225.

6s and 4s.

Prayer to the Triune Jehovah.

1 THOU! whose almighty word
Chaos and darkness heard,

And took their flight,-
Hear us, we humbly pray,
And where the gospel's day
Sheds not its glorious ray,-
"Let there be light!"

2 Thou! who didst come to bring,
On thy redeeming wing,
Healing and sight,-

Health to the sick in mind,
Sight to the inly blind,-
Oh! now to all mankind
"Let there be light!"

3 Spirit of truth and love,
Life-giving holy Dove!
Speed forth thy flight:
