A T that time: One of the Pharifees asked Jefus to eat with him. And going into the Pharifee's houfe, he placed himself at table. And behold a woman who was a finner in the city, when she knew that he was at table in the house of the Pharifee, brought an alabafter box of perfumes; and, ftanding behind at his feet, fhe began to wash his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and the kiffed his feet, and anointed them with the perfumes. And the Pharifee, who had invited him, feeing it, spoke within himself, faying This man, if he were a prophet, would certainly know who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that fhe is a finner. And Jefus fpeaking, faid to him: Simon, I have fomewhat to say to thee. And he faid: Mafter, fpeak. A certain creditor had two debtors; the one owed him five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And whereas they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which therefore of the two loveth him most? Simon anfwering him, said: I fuppofe that he, to whom he forgave the moft. And he a Expl. And they, who were at table with him, began to fay within themselves: Who is this, that even forgiveth fins? And he faid to the woman: Thy faith hath faved thee; go in peace.

Lord our God, who haft appointed the offerings to be confecrated to thee, to consist chiefly of thofe creatures, which thou createdst for the fupport of our weakness: grant, we beseech thee, that they may be to us both a help in this life, and a facrament to procure us that which is eternal. At that time: The chief priests and Pharifees affembled in Council against Jefus, and faid: What are we doing; for this man worketh many miracles? If we let him thus alone, all will believe in him and the Romans will come and deftroy our place f and nation. But one of them, named Caiphas, being high priest that year, faid to them: You know nothing, nor do you confider that it is expedient for you that one man fhould die for the people, and not the whole nation perifh. But this he fpake not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophefied, that Jefus was to die for the nation; and not for that nation only, but to gather together the children of God, who were dispersed every where. From that day therefore they refolved to put him to death. Jefus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but retired to a
