The first edition contains two verses in "Charmides," which are omitted in later editions.

MENTIONING "THE IDEAL HUSBAND"

A REMARKABLE WILDE LETTER

WILDE, OSCAR. A. L. S., (O.W). 8 pp., 8vo. (Paris), May 24 (no year), to Leonard Smithers (with addressed envelope).

A LETTER OF SUPERLATIVE INTEREST.

$350.00

"Maurice arrived this morning looking tired and beautiful. He seems to have been a great success in London. My friend Robert Ross seems to have taken quite an interest in him. He is so fond of children and of people like myself, who have childlike simple natures.

I wonder you don't ever publish a series-The Short Story Series-composed chiefly of translations from the French. Every week in the Paris papers there appears at least two or three really capital short stories-full of wit, of observation; concentrated in style and invariably clever in idea. The French can treat any subject with wit and where one laughs there is no immorality-Immorality and seriousness begin together I am thinking of writing a novel called "The Boy-snatcher of Clement's Inn" -will you ask Robbie Ross what he thinks of the title." . . etc.
