16979 AQUINATIS (S. Thoma) [Quæstiones disputata de Veritate] stout folio, hf. bd. fine copy, £5. Rome, Arnoldus Pannartz, 1476

One of the latest and scarcest productions of the famous first press of Rome, from which Schweinheim had already seceded. 17024 BONIFACIUS. INCIPIT LIBER SEXTUS DECRETALIŪ DNI BONIFACII PAPE VIII, large folio, printed on vellum, with painted capitals and a finely illuminated initial; bound in brown morocco extra, gilt edges, by Niedrée, £120.

Mogunt. per Petrum Schoiffer de Gernszhem, 1470 RARE. Didot's copy, similar to this and also in a modern binding, fetched £172. The book is a fine cxample of the Schöffer press, and has the colophon, printed in red ink, which proves beyond dispute that Mentz was the birthplace of typography.

17025 CLEMENT V.

INCIP. COSTONES CLE. PPE. V. VNACū APPARATU DNI. Jo. AN., roy. folio, printed on Vellum, bound in parchment, fine copy, £84.

Magunt. Petr. Schoiffer, 1471

WITH THE FOUR EXTREMELY RARE ADDITIONAL LEAVES which contain the Rule of St. Francis and the "execrabilis" constitution of John XXII.

As a specimen of vellum-printing, and of the first printingpress, this is a volume of no small interest.

17026 BARBACIE (Andrea) Repetitio Solennis Rubrica de Fide Instrumentorum, Ed. Princ. Bononiæ (Ugo Ruggerius), 1474BARTHOLOMEI CEPOLLE Cautelle, Mediolani, Christoforus Waldarfer, 1475-2 vols. in 1, folio, old red MOROCCO, gilt edges, EXCESSIVELY RARE, £5. 1474-75

Both works are amongst the earliest productions of the celebrated presses from which they emanated. The second book is a curious collection of nice law-points, quibbles and quillets, and hints for sharp practice.

b. Decrees of Councils and Synods; Acts of Provincial Churches.

17027 CONCILIA. CONCILIORUM OMNIUM GENERALIUM ET PROVINCIALIUM COLLECTIO REGIA, 37 vols. roy. folio, old red morocco gilt, with the Arms of Louis XIV in gold on the sides and the royal crown and interlaced LL on the backs, gilt and marbled edges, A LARGE AND MAGNIFICENT COPY, £110.

Paris. e typog. Regia, 1644

"Cette collection se trouve difficilement," says Brunet; a remark which applies with tenfold force to the occurrence of such a superb uniform copy as this. When it is remembered that Mansi's great collection of Councils stops short with the fifteenth century, the value of the older collections becomes apparent. This is usually called the Royal or the Louvre collection. 17028 CONCILIA. NOVA COLLECTIO CONCILIORUM. STEPHANUS BALUZIUS in unum collegit, cum notis illustravit, LARGE PAPER, 1 vol. roy. folio (all published), old French red morocco gilt, gilt edges, FINE COPY, £5. Paris. 1683

This is a necessary supplement to various editions, and must be appended either to Labbé's, or Hardouin's, or the Royal Councils.
