Hence the most readable Latin chronicle of the twelfth century is one that has the least real claim to that title. But the History of the Kings of Britain is no more to be ruled out of a place in the chronicle literature of England, than it is to be ousted from its assured pre-eminence as the fountain-head of Arthurian romance.
