On the reverse is a table of moveable feasts. Foll. 2-7 contain the
Kalendar; fol. 8 the Exorcismus aque, etc. The text, in double columns,
begins, under a woodcut, on Fol. 9, which is counted in the numeration as
Fol. 1. (Foll. 17-24, numbered ix-xvi, are missing ; and in the
foliation the numbers lxxxvii and lxxxviii are skipped). There are two
leaves of vellum in the Calendar, one of them containing the large wood-
cut of the Crucifixion, which bear no numbers, but are intended to repre-
sent foll. clv, clvi (which would be 161, 162 of the actual number). The
Temporale ends on fol. clxx (176 of the actual number of leaves). The
Proprium Sanctorum follows on 74 unnumbered leaves. The Com-
mune Sanctorum follows on 64 numbered leaves; the colophon being given
on lxiijb, col. 2: Missale ad vsum ecclesie Saris | buriensis Ti. in
alma Parisiorum | academia, opera vvolffgangi Ho- | pylij, impensis
vero Francisci byr | chman .. and on the eleventh line below this : 1514.

1514 63 0 0 Notwithstanding the imperfections specified above, this is a wonderfully desirable copy of a very rare book. It is 13] inches in height by 9 in. in breadth. Such another

£ 8. is hardly likely to be found.—The copy in the British Museum is described as very imperfect.

There are two MS. entries in the calendar, one of the birth of Foulk Haselwood in 1546, the other of the birth of his son William in 1570. This family was of

EXTREMELY RARE ; so rare, indeed, that I cannot ascertain whether it ever
had a Calendar or not. It consists of 260 leaves, thus signatured : A-X in eights ;
Y in 7 leaves ; a 8 leaves ; b 7 leaves ; c 7 leaves ; d 8 leaves; e 5 leaves ; f one leaf;
g 10 leaves ; aa-dd, 8 leaves each ; ee 7 leaves. Thus there would seem to be
wanting leaves b 6, c 4, e 6-8, f 1, f3-8. From the Service for the Dead, itis evident
that this Breviary was compiled for a congregation of the Franciscan order, although

the title does not mention the fact.

This is one of the rarest books of its kind and is very well coloured. On the title
is printed the escutcheon of some lady-vert, trois aiglettes or.—The picture in the
Calendar for December is a striking one.

Death enters a chamber in which a woman
is lying naked in bed. He takes her hand (or feels her pulse) unseen by the two ladies

who are kneeling at the foot of the bed.

The text is given collaterally in French and Latin, both in Roman types, but the

Latin in smaller characters and in the marginal column. This is like an imitation of
the contemporary Saram books in English and Latin. It is a very pretty book with
Tory-like illustrations, and is rare. On the upper cover we find “Endvrer me plaist”
“Car Espoir me conforte"; on the lower “Tovt a Diev. Beavcovp avlx Parens”
“plvs a lamie."

The name of Kerver is on the title ; at end that of Jean Lescallier is substituted.
The book consists of 168 leaves, with signatures as follows : A-R in eights, S in four,
a-c in eights and d in four leaves.

A VOLUME OF EXQUISITE BEAUTY, CONTAINING AN AUTOGRAPH INSCRIPTION BY HENRY VIII. The colouring and illumination are superbly fine, of a kind which can hardly be realised by those who are accustomed to admire the inartistic and glaring splendours of the prayerbooks produced by the Hardouins. The volume was, no doubt, the finest procurable example of a Book of Hours for the English Church which had been produced in Paris; and we are led to suspect, from the excision of some name or badge on the title, that its first owner was Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury. The King's inscription may have accompanied the bestowal of that title upon Reginald Pole's mother, and is found here under the picture of the Annunciation, in the following terms: “I pray yow pray for me your lowyng cousin Henry R”, in his well-known bold calligraphy.

The book consists of 120 leaves, with signatures a-p in eights, thirty lines to the page. Every page has a border filled with decorative and pictorial designs, among which there are two distinct sets of illustrations of the Dance of Death. Besides these there are many small designs in the text which we have not taken the trouble to count; eight paintings of medium size, and thirteen grand miniatures, of which each occupies a full page.—The list of contents (which occupies p. 4 and the obverse of p. 5), is in English, as well as many of the prayers in the text.--The size of the larger miniatures is 202 x 123 mm. The edition was unknown to Brunet and Didot.

Divorced in 1533, Henry VIII's first Queen died in 1536 at Kimbolton Castle. " This book was good Queene Kat’in boke and she gave yt to (Ma)rge(ret) Coke hir woman, and sbe gave it Betryce Ogle hyr dowght' and she gave yt to Rich(ard)e Ogle hyr husband & I the said Richer wyll that in my dethe she shall have the sayd boke ageyn and non other to have yt.” This was written on the final flyleaf, and may be assigned to 1536-38. Close to it appears the obliterated signature of Mary Brown of about the same period ; and on the opposite page is a note by a woman, 6 Yours to har powre yf she coulde pleasure yow Andreas Man.” It would seem as though Mrs. Ogle were making a present of the book to this Andreas Mann. Next it passed through the hands of someone whose signature is obliterated to "the Reght Honorable and the most Reverend Father in God the Lord Archebushop of Yorckes grace hys synguler good lord and Master.” This was before 1544. The Archbishop (Edward Lee), who died in that year, may have bestowed it on Fairfax the dispossessed Prior of Kyme, and next possessor, who ultimately gave it to Sir Robert Dymock. This transaction is recorded in a note by Dymock—“ Sum Roberti Dymock ex dono Rodolphi farefax

quondam Prioris monasterii de Kyme.” Kyme was a priory in Lincolnshire.

EXCESSIVELY RARE, only two other copies on vellum being known to us, one in
the Bodleian, the other in the Spencer-Rylands library. Two leaves have part of the
margins cut away ; the absent leaves are those numbered xix, xxii, lv, lvi, xcir, xcv,
and cxxxi ; and part of lii is also cut away. Some of the rubrics are scored through
in red ink, in obedience to Henry VIIl's orders.

This is one of the finest of the printed Sarum Primers, and is decorated with unusual excellence.
