This book, which Dr. Kitto calls "valuable and very rare," has recently been much inquired after, in consequence of a reference in "The Times" to a passage from Franc. Navarre, who lived in 1604, quoted by the author, in which the destruction of the Turkish Empire is foretold, as destined to take place within 251 years, marking 1854-56 as the period—a singular prophecy, considering the recent state of Turkey in the war with Russia, and the necessity she has submitted to in allowing the great Western Powers to interfere in the internal arrangements of her empire, by placing her Christian population on a footing nearly equal to that of the disciples of Islamism, as well as the recent installation of the Sultan as a Knight of the Garter.

Ejusdem Epistolæ, collegit N. Coletus; folio, portrait, vellum, £1 4s. Venetiis, 1756 Cardinal Quirini, the friend of Newton, Fenelon, and Montfaucon, was celebrated as one of the greatest philologists of his day, and equally looked up to as a profound historian and antiquary. He enjoyed the rare privilege of being a member of all the most celebrated learned societies in Europe, irrespective of creeds; was tolerant and courteous; and his correspondence touches largely both upon church and secular transactions, more particularly appertaining to literature, of which he was a distinguished patron, as is evidenced in the magnificent library he presented to the Vatican.
