14. We finners do befeech thee to hear us, O Lord God; and that it may please thee to rule and govern thy holy Church univerfal in the right way;

PARAPHRASE.

by his circumcifion, whereby he himself fulfilled, and, for our fakes has abolished, the troublesome rights of the antient ceremonial law; by his facred baptifm, whereby he transferred that holy right into his religion; for the fake of his unparallelled example, in long and devout, fafting, and his fuffering himself to be tempted in order to inftruct us how to refift the affaults of the devil;-O gracious God, we beseech thee to deliver us.

12. O blessed Saviour, in confideration of thy agony in the garden, and thy fweating drops of blood, when the weight of all our fins was laid upon thee; by thy fuffering, for our fakes, the ignominious death of the trofs, and the intolerable anguish thereof; by thy yielding thy precious unfpotted life a prey to death; by thy fuffering thy body to lie in a cold and darkfome grave for our fakes; by thy rifing again from the Sepulchre, to convince us of our refurrection after death; and by thy afcending up into heaven, where, feated at the right hand of God, thou dost intercede for us and prepareft for us a place in those manfions of eternal blifs; -O gracious God, we beseech thee to deliver us.

13. We therefore pray thee, in confideration of all these parts of thy mediatorfhip, and, for the fake of all these meritorious actions of thine, to afford us thy affiftance whenever we are rendered difconfolate, or too much elated and negligent by profperity; that thou wouldst fupport us under the terrors of death, and pardon our failings at the great day of jedgment;-O gracious God, we beseech thee to deliver us.

14. And since thou deigneft to give ear to the fupplications of penitent finners, we, who by reafon of our numerous tranfgreffions, are afraid to affame to ourfelves a greater title, we beseech thee to grant thy protection to thy holy church, and to enable it to maintain all the parts of the christian faith in exact purity; and to preferve it from being over-run by infidelity, or poifoned by herefy:-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

15. That thou wouldst be graciously pleafed to preferve and confirm, in the exercife and protection of the true religion, thy fervant George, who has, by thy efpecial Providence, been appointed to reign over us; that he may acquit himself with righteoufnefs in all the public adminiftrations of his high office, and adhere with holiness to all the particular obligations of the chriftian life-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

That thou, in whofe hand the hearts of princes are, (Prov. xxi.) wouldft vouchfafe to direct his mind in fuch a manner, and endue him with fuch holy principles, that he may always live in a steady faith of all thy revelations and promifes; in a juft fear of thy fupreme authority; and a constant attachment to thy law; that his trust and affiance may be more grounded upon thy protection and providence, than upon his fecular power; and that, in all his actions, he may make it his aim rather to promote thy glory than to aggrandize his own which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

That it would pleafe thy goodness to defend him in all the dangers to which the high ftations of princes expose them in an envious and wicked world, and to make him victorious over all his enemies, whenever he is engaged in war in the caufe of his country's liberties or religion :-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

18. That thou wouldst be pleafed to afford thy bleffing and protection to our gracious queen Charlotte, and all other branches of the royal family, which, by royal defcent and our laws, have a right to facceed to the throne of this nation which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

19. That thou wouldst be pleased to enlighten and confer the gifts of thy grace upon those whom thou haft appointed to be the minifters of thy gofpel: upon the three orders of the clergy, bishops, priefts, and deacons; that by thy bleffing upon their ftudies, they may fufficiently unand the holy fcriptures; and that they may enforce the doctrine of thy holy religion, as well by the good examples of their lives, as by their zealously preaching the true and orthodox expofitions of thy word:which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thec to grant us.

That thou wouldst be pleafed to confer upon the lords of the privy council, (on whofe prudent determinations the public welfare does in a great measure depend) and upon the rest of the nobility, the fpirit of wifdem, to understand what is just and fitting; and grace, to advise or adjudge it; give them, O Lord, the grace to fet good examples to inferiors, and to let their light fhine fo brightly before men, that they may be as remarkable for piety and virtue, as for high rank and condition :which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

That thou wouldst be pleafed to afford thy bleffing and protection to all the other magiftrates of the realm, judges, juftices, &c. endowing them with fnch a portion of thy grace, as may be fufficient to fecure them from prejudice or corruption, and enable them to adminifter impartial juftice to all men, and to maintain the truth and honour of religion and the laws-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

22. That thou wouldst be pleafed to make all thy fubjects of this kingdom partake of thy bleffing and protection, as they are all become thy people, by embracing the true reformed religion:-which petition, Ó gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

23. Intreating thee to extend thy goodness to all foreign nations, by caufing them to live in peace and unity with their neighbouring princes and ftates, and in concord amongst themfelves :-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

24. That it would pleafe thee to infpire the hearts of thy fervants, the clergy and people of this land, with a fincere love, a reasonable fear of thee, and a conftant obedience of thy commandments :-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

25. That it may please thee to confer upon them every day increase of chriftian graces, and to enable them to make conftant improvements upon what they have already received; that they may, with humility and proper attention, give ear to the pious documents of their pastors; that being free from all prejudice, prepoffeffion and obftinacy, they may hear them with pure and difinterested minds, as becomes the mildness and lowly difpofition of a difciple of Jefus Chrift; and that they may bring forth the fruits of the fpirit, love, joy, peace, long fuffering, &c. (Gal. v. 22, 23.)-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

We likewife humbly make application unto thee, in behalf of thofe who are without the church; befeeching thee to open their eyes to the catholic faith, and to bring back to the pale of the church, all who have quitted it, either by heretical opinions or unwarrantable feparations :which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

27. That thou wouldst be pleafed to fortify and confirm all true christians in the faith, whereof they make profeffion, and the good refolutions which they have formed, that they may not be perverted by any

28. That it may pleafe thee to fuccour, help, and comfort all that are in danger, neceffity, and tribulation

29. That it may please thee to preserve all that travel by land or by water, all women labouring of child, all fick perfons, and young children, and to fhew thy pity upon all prifoners and captives;

PARAPHRASE

pernicious opinions, nor fall into any deadly fin; to afford affistance and confolation to thofe weak-hearted chriftians, whofe timorous confciences are troubled with doubts and fufpicions of offending God by actions in themfelves indifferent; to give true repentance to fuch as are betrayed into any heinous fin, that they may emerge from thence, and again attain to a ftate of true piety; and finally, to make fuch a spirit of goodness prevail among us, that vice being entirely banished, we may be enabled to refift the efforts and subdue the power of our great adverfary the devil :—which petition, gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

28. That it would please thee to afford thy divine aid to all that are expofed to any danger or difficulty, relief to all indigent perfous, and comfort to all fuch as ftruggle with adverfity or tribulation which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

29. And fince there are many who have it not in their power to join in the public prayers, which we offer up to the Almighty; we humbly petition thee to defend all travellers by land from the affaults of robbers, and other unlucky accidents; all mariners and paffengers by fea from pirates, forms and tempefts; all women who fuffer the pains of child-birth; all perfons in general, who are afflicted with any dangerous pain or illness; all young children, who are apt to run into danger for want of thought; and all prifoners and captives, more particularly those who fuffer the rigours of confinement on account of their religion:-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.

30. That thou wouldst be pleased to take all widows and orphans under thy particular care and protection, as thou art the only friend upon whom they can, with fecurity, rely; and to afford the fame affiftance to all others who may ftand in need of it:-which petition, O gracious God, we beg of thee to grant us.
