PREFACE TO TENTH EDITION. THIS work is intended to form a convenient means of reference, to enable persons readily to find out the chief scientific and technological works at present in print. The plan adopted in its compilation has been first, to state the full title of each book, under the author's name, and to arrange those names in alphabetical order; and secondly to give an Index of the subjects in alphabetical order, with the names of the authors added. In this way it is hoped that little difficulty will be found in obtaining a selection of books by any author, and on any subject. No attempt is made at comparison, and the Student is thus left to select such books as he may prefer. American and other foreign publications are duly noted; but when selections of these are made, it should be understood that longer time will be necessary for the supply. In issuing the present enlarged and revised edition, it may be convenient to point out that works on Theology, Law, and Medicine, are omitted; whilst of those pertaining to Literature and the Fine Arts, few besides encyclopædias and the like; works on practical Architecture or Design, and the recognised treatises on Music, are included. Educational works, which are purely literary in character, are not admitted; and of others, it has been thought well to exclude those which are distinctly elementary in scope. An addition has been made to the large number of treatises on particular trades or manufactures, and of recognised modern works on commerce and commercial economy; and books of recent exploration have been included, which, though nominally of travel, contain ethnographic and physiographic information. The Index to subjects is similar to that adopted last year, and a list is added of publishers and their addresses, as also one of the makers of approved apparatus. The best thanks of the Company are due to the various Publishers for the ready assistance afforded in the compilation of this Catalogue. Corrected and additions made to May 16th, 1881. |
