MR. BARNARD SMITH's ARITHMETIC continued.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

ATHENEUM, April 24, 1854.

"To all whose minds are sufficiently developed to comprehend the simplest mathematical reasoning, and who have not yet thoroughly mastered the principles of Arithmetic and Algebra, it is calculated to be of great advantage. We are not surprised to find it has obtained high encomiums from Dr. Peacock and many others who have tested its value."

ENGLISH JOURNAL OF EDUCATION, July, 1854.

"Mr. Smith's treatise on Arithmetic and Algebra is the best that has ever come under our observation."

PHILOSOPHICAL MAGAZINE, Sept. 1855.

"We need say no more than repeat the encomium of Dr. Peacock, and recommend it as the best book on the subject."

SPECTATOR, Oct. 21, 1854.

"Clear in its definitions and well graduated in its exercises. It will be found a very useful work."

EDUCATIONAL TIMES, Nov. 1854.

"With confidence we recommend it to all first-rate schools."

ENGLISH JOURNAL OF EDUCATION, Nov. 1855.

(In a Notice of the Chief Works recently published on Arithmetic.)
"A very valuable feature of Mr. Smith's Book is the appended ‘Senate-
House Papers. They may be set as useful occasional exercises for the fifth
and sixth form boys who have risen into higher mathematical regions;
with respect to whom it is always important to take care that they do not
forget the elements... I may finish this article by saying (acting on Mr.
Trench's suggestion as to the revival of obsolete words) I would rathest use
Barnard Smith."

EDUCATOR, July, 1856.

"We strongly recommended this volume when it first appeared, and the issue of a third Edition is a proof that its merits have been largely appre ciated. It has undergone a thorough revision, and is considerably enlarged.

By the same Author.

Mechanics and Hydrostatics in their Principles and Application with numerous systematically arranged Examples, taken from the Cambridge Examination Papers, with a special reference to the ordinary Examination for B.A. Degree.

Preparing for Publication.

By J. C. SNOWBALL, M.A.,

Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge,

A New and Cheaper (THE NINTH) Edition of

1. The Elements of Plane and Spherical Trigonometry. Greatly improved and enlarged. Crown 8vo. bound in cloth, 7s. 6d.

This edition has been carefully revised by the Author, and some important alterations and additions have been introduced. A large addition has been made to the collection of Examples for practice.

"A new Edition of an old favourite text-book, and an improvement on the seven that have preceded it in several respects. It has been carefully revised throughout; the methods for establishing the most important propositions are superior; more than 200 new examples-taken from recent Examination Papers-have been added; and to crown all, the price has been reduced. What more need be said to secure for it a welcome from those who wish to make themselves masters of the important subject of which it treats?"—ATHEN ÆUM.

2. An Introduction to the Elements of Plane Trigonometry. Designed for the use of Schools. Second Edition.

8vo. 5s.

3. The Cambridge Course of Elementary Natural Philosophy. Being the Propositions in Mechanics and Hydrostatics in which persons who are not Candidates for Honors are examined for the Degree of B.A. To which are added numerous Examples and Problems from the University Examination Papers, and Original, with Hints for their Solutions. Fourth Edition. Crown 8vo. bound in cloth, 5s.

The examples have been selected almost exclusively from the College

"A TREATISE WHICH WILL TAKE ITS PLACE AMONGST OUR STANDARD
EDUCATIONAL WORKS. THE EXPLANATIONS IN THE EARLY PARTS
OF THE VOLUME ARE CLEAR AND CONVINCING, AND CANNOT FAIL TO
INTEREST THE STUDENT."-English Journal of Education.

"FOR THE GREAT BULK OF MATHEMATICAL STUDENTS-ESPECIALLY at
THE BEGINNING OF THEIR ACQUAINTANCE WITH THE CALCULUS—WE
HAVE NOT SEEN A TREATISE SO WELL ADAPTED AS THE PRESENT."
-Athenæum.

2. A Treatise on the Integral Calculus, and its Applications, with numerous Examples. Crown 8vo. cloth,

10s. 6d.

3. A Treatise on Analytical Statics.

Just Published.

With numerous Examples. Crown 8vo. cloth, 10s. 6d.

"MR. PRATT'S TREATISE ON MECHANICAL PHILOSOPHY is now out of
print, and the present work may be regarded as a republication, with
large additions, of that portion of it which treats of Statics."-PREFACE.
"We know of no other work which is so admirably adapted to the wants of
a large class of Mathematical Students.-ATHENÆUM.

"One of the most satisfactory evidences of the advancement of Education in
Cambridge, is the recent improvements of the University Class-Books.
The perspicuous language, rigorous investigations, conscientious scrutiny
of difficulties, and methodical treatment which characterize Mr. Tod-
hunter's works, entitle him to a large share of the honour of that im-
provement."-CIVIL ENGINEER'S AND ARCHITECT'S JOURNAL.
"The Treatise is an excellent one, fully sustaining the high character of
its Author, and the various subjects which it embraces, have received
additional interest from the judicious observations and lucid explanations
which Mr. Todhunter has liberally interspersed throughout the volume,
tending not only to simplify processes, but to facilitate the acquisition of
principles. The Treatise is admirably adapted either for School or
Collegiate instruction, and will form a first-rate Text-book on Analytical
Statics."-ENGLISH JOURNAL OF EDUCATION.
