PREFACE.

It was only after the issue, in 1908, of the late Dr. Peach's monograph on "The Higher Crustacea of the Carboniferous Rocks of Scotland," that a decision was reached to include a series of similar palæontological memoirs in the publications of the Geological Survey. Four memoirs of this series had been published by the middle of 1914, after which time the completion of the first volume became delayed by circumstances occasioned by the war. The volume is now brought to a conclusion by the publication of Part 5. A revised title-page for Part 1 is now issued, giving to that part its correct status as the first of a series.

It was expected that the scope of the first volume would be confined to the description and illustration of groups of Carboniferous fossils; but it was later found convenient to depart from this scheme and to issue Prof. O. T. Jones's memoir as the final part.

In preparing this monograph Prof. Jones has studied not only the material in the collections of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, but also many specimens in the British Museum (Natural History), the Sedgwick Museum, and other British collections; and we desire to acknowledge the assistance received and the permission freely given in all cases to make the fullest use of such material.

By reason of an unavoidable delay in the issue of Prof. Jones's memoir, the plates in that work bear in error the imprint 1927.
