PREFACE.

A VOLUME of Miscellaneous Sermons was announced by Archdeacon Hare several years ago. It included those which had appeared in the first edition of the Victory of Faith, and the Mission of the Comforter, and had been omitted in subsequent editions. But the publication was delayed by his wish to illustrate them with notes, and these, from the pressure of various occupations and of frequent illnesses, he was never able to write. Several of the Sermons have been earnestly enquired for, by persons who have felt their value, and express deep obligation to their teaching, and who urge that though the notes would have given additional value to them, yet that their absence is not sufficient reason for withholding the republication. In the present volume they are therefore inserted, together with several others which were preached on special occasions during the latter years of the author's life.

The duty of making Archdeacon Hare's life the subject of a Memoir has been strongly urged upon his friends, by many persons whose opinion they esteem very highly, and whose suggestions have been carefully considered. There are many literary remains, and there is a large collection of his letters to various, and, some of them, very eminent friends, from which the materials for a biography might easily be gathered.
