IN preparing this book I have got the greatest help from the tenth edition of the Commentaries by Dittenberger-Kraner (1877). I have also made use of the editions of Nipperdey (1847), Long (1859), and Frigell (1861), and of various valuable articles in the Philologus by J. C. Heller and others. Of other books more or less closely connected with the subject I may mention the Histoire de Jules César by the late Emperor Napoleon; Cäsar's Gallischer Krieg in dem Jahre 52 v. Chr. by General August von Göler; Heerwesen und Kriegführung C. Julius Cäsars by W. Rüstow; and the well-known histories of Long, Mommsen (Engl. transl. by Dickson, vol. IV. in 1871) and Merivale (new edition in 8 vols.). For grammar I have constantly referred to Mr Roby's Latin Grammar and Prof. Kennedy's Public School Latin GramGrammatical difficulties cannot always be explained in the brief space of a note in a way that shall be quite within the comprehension of a young student, and much filling in of explanatory details must be left to the teacher, and I assume that no teacher or schoolmaster will be without one or other
